Direct Teaching

Course Description:

In this class participants will learn how to transform a lecture into an exciting teaching approach that meets the needs of students with different learning styles. Participants will get practice in delivering direct teaching lessons from the actual curriculum they will be teaching in the upcoming school year and get feedback on that delivery.

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Given readings (listed below) student determines the relative importance of Direct Instruction in the classroom with 90 percent accuracy on an opening quiz.
  2. Given a post quiz, student identifies the elements of a direct teach correctly
  3. Given DT and CAT software, student reviews and prepares a DT lesson with accompanying materials. The lesson will contain the elements of DT and the presentation will clearly show the modeling in steps and the guided practice for each step.

Readings:

Please make sure to have the following read prior to class (in the event you have difficulty with the web, please e-mail me for the readings):

  1. "What has the Greatest Influence on Student Learning"
Geoff Petty, author of 'Teaching Today’ and Learning Development Manager at Sutton Coldfield College provides a summary of the work done by John Hattie, Professor of Education, University of Auckland, which discusses the greatest influences on student learning. The document is based on Geoff's presentation, 'Learning Styles and ICT', at the Ferl 16-19 Conference 2002.
  2. "What the Data Really Show:  Direct Instruction Really Works!"
The hard data show that Direct Instruction excels in educating children for life, giving them skills they need, along with self-esteem and positive feelings about school.
  3. "Using Direct Instruction to Improve Student Learning"
Direct instruction is a practical method for teaching skills ... and it works! Study after study has shown that direct instruction improves student performance as indicated by standardized test scores. Other educational studies conclude that direct instruction results in significant gains in achievement and improved student performance.

Teaching Strategy:

Direct Teaching will be the strategy used to deliver this lesson.
