All-School Raises Awareness
April 18, 2008 --Today’s All-School assembly focused on why April 25, the National Day of Silence, is needed nationwide. The day is dedicated to raising awareness of the name calling, bullying, and harassment that gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered students experience every day at schools around the nation and to call for safer schools, tolerance, and positive change. This year’s observance will honor Lawrence King, a 15–year-old from California who lost his life in February when a 14-year-old classmate shot him because he was gay.

Presented by Brewster’s Gay Straight Alliance and Mundiamo, the assembly consisted of many MySpace.com videos interspersed with facts and figures read by members of the two organizations. The videos, accompanied by poignant music like Sarah McLaughlin’s “In the Arms of the Angel,” showed the horrific death toll of young people who were victims of hate crimes in the past years. The audience, who sat silent and somewhat stunned through the videos, was asked to think about what they say about others and to have the courage to speak up when they hear slurs, based not only on sexual preference, but also on race, ethnicity, gender, or religion. The students were asked to consider participating in next Friday’s National Day of Silence in support of their peers.

Travis Roy: A Change in Plans
April 13, 2007 -- At today's All-School Assembly, Travis Roy, 32, told the Brewster community how he learned at a young age that it was important to set and write down goals if you truly want to achieve them. As a freshman in high school, his goal was to play Division 1 college hockey. “I don’t think you have the incentive if you don’t write out your goals,” he acknowledged. When he was finished writing out his goals, which he said were “part reality, part fantasy,” he shared them with his parents, who he recalled smiled while reading them. At the time, his father reminded him that “You have to have the grades to get into college.” So Roy, who had mild dyslexia, returned to his bedroom and revised his goals to include maintaining a B average and breaking 1000 on the SATs. Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
February 23-25, 2007 -- In rehearsals since October, it was evident that the cast and crew, along with the drama and musical directors, worked hard to produce “Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” Roger Miller’s lyrics and music lent a bluegrass sound to many of the song and dance numbers. Nic Krainchich '08, Brittanie Pierce '10, Sarah Thompson '07, and Jose Docen (artist in residence) were just some of the talented soloists and actors. The scenes were often laugh-out-loud funny, but some were also quite poignant, as Jim revealed his torment at being separated from his family, and Huck pondered the nature of slavery and questioned his beliefs. Winter Carnival
January 27 - February 4, 2007 – Students and faculty form teams and compete for prizes during this weeklong event. It kicks off with competitive events in the Smith Center (January 27). Wednesday is another reason to be out of dress code; team members must wear clothing that clashes. In the evening, teams compete against each other in a Pictionary tournament. Thursday teams participate in a scavenger hunt. Friday night, teams can get out and shout while being judged on their spirit at the boys' varsity hockey game. Saturday is the Winter Formal Dance, where the Winter Carnival king and queen will be chosen. The week concludes with the wildly popular lip sync contest.
