Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, November 29, 2000 — Bob Carter, a senior master science teacher at Brewster Academy, was named the Pat Keyes Technology Educator by the New Hampshire Society for Technology in Education (NHSTE) today.

The award is presented annually by NHSTE to a classroom teacher in New Hampshire using and integrating technology in the curriculum in an exemplary fashion.

"This year's recipient provides a strong example of how technology can be used to empower students' learning," said M. Jeanne Poterucha, president of NHSTE. "Mr. Carter demonstrates the qualities of using technology that are a role model for us all."

Bob carterOne example of Carter's innovative use of technology in the classroom is the computer workbooks he created that allow students to do complex chemistry equations. The workbook then gives students immediate feedback on whether they are doing the homework problems correctly and, in the case of errors, provides a step-by-step explanation of how the equations should be completed correctly. Carter can then read through the program to see where a particular student may be having difficulty. Students have given excellent feedback on these workbooks and say they have helped them understand the material in a way that would be difficult without the technology.

In his nomination of Carter, Brewster Science Department Chair Bruce Gorrill said, "Bob is an extremely valuable resource here at Brewster, and I have not seen anyone in the field of education who has done more to advance technology and its use by students and faculty."

As the Pat Keyes Technology Educator, Carter will be nominated by NHSTE for both the Technology and Learning Teacher of the Year Award and The International Society for Technology in Education's (ISTE) Outstanding Technology Leader in Education Award. Additionally, Carter received a cash award; complimentary registration to the Christa McAuliffe Technology Conference; complimentary NHSTE membership for a year; and letters of commendation from Concord and Washington.

"I'm honored to be the recipient of an award that I know many here at Brewster could be recognized for," Bob Carter said. "In this community, we are about doing those things that help students learn better. I'm excited that we are truly pioneering the use of technology in that effort."

NHSTE is a nonprofit organization formed by volunteers to improve education through the use of information technologies and to provide a structure for linking educators across the state to share the effective application of emerging technologies in New Hampshire schools. The NHSTE is an affiliate of the International Society for Technology in Education.
