Brewster Teachers Honored As "Shapers of Our Future" Contact: Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, August 2001 — Brewster Academy teachers have been chosen as "Shapers of Our Future 2001" by Converge magazine. The recognition is especially noteworthy in that the magazine annually honors individuals for their contributions to education but chose to recognize the entire Brewster faculty for the significant impact the teachers and their teaching methods have had on students' learning. The Brewster faculty share the honor with a woman twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, a presidential appointee, professors, policy-makers, students and international educators, higher-education leaders, and corporate executives. In the introduction Converge Editor Victor Rivero praises Brewster for its contributions to the field of education saying, "In this year's line-up of individual innovators and leaders shaping our future, Brewster Academy of Wolfeboro, N.H., earns a special place as an honored group. Under the leadership of David M. Smith and associate headmaster Alan Bain, they have leveraged technology to redefine teaching and learning. In making meaningful connections, Brewster is a showcase for what is working in education. " Nine students are featured in the article talking about how Brewster teachers have successfully impacted their learning and education experience. Anne Marie Roy of Bartlett, N.H., a 2001 graduate, praises the teachers for their adept delivery of a multi-level curriculum in each class, explaining that "Classes are set up [multi-leveled] so that everyone can work at their own pace. I was never able to obtain the grades that I wanted because I was always so bored with the work that I wouldn't do it and then I'd fall behind. At Brewster, I can move ahead when I need to." In addition to the honor from Converge, in the past year Brewster's innovative and successful curriculum has been the subject of feature articles in The New York Times and USA Today as well as other publications. Converge details real-life solutions and offers expert advice about technology and its positive influence on education. It explores innovation and spotlights actual profound changes in the administration and delivery of education at all levels. The article is available online at www.convergemag.com.
