41 Brewster HOWLers Rock Carnegie Hall

April 8, 2008 -- To an almost sold-out house of 2,805 seats, HOWL and several other choruses from as far away as Alaska and Georgia performed the Lord Nelson Mass of Joseph Haydn with the New England Symphonic Ensemble at New York City's Carnegie Hall. The excellent singing of the chorus mixed with the acoustics and beauty of the hall transported the audience far away from the first shabby rehearsal on Saturday morning. At that time we really didn't know if we could pull off a successful concert. With three days of intense rehearsing under the firm but quirky baton of John Rutter, however, the groups pulled together to produce rich, uniform tones with good diction. It was a remarkable transformation over the days of their residency.                 -- Andy Campbell, Brewster's Music Director

I'll Take Manhattan Dinner Theater

Benefit Raises Funds for Performance at Carnegie Hall

March 29, 2008 -- The week before Brewster's HOWL chorus set off for the adventure of a life time -- to perform at Carnegie Hall -- the Department of Performing Arts hosted “I’ll Take Manhattan”, a dinner theater to benefit the trip. The evening's emcees, Tony the Mole (Alex Moulton '08) and Nicky Lasagna (Nik Krainchich '08) set the scene in the Big Apple and kept the full house laughing between classic songs, choruses, hilarious skits, and lively scenes all performed by members of HOWL. Music Director Andy Campbell on the piano and master clarinetist Joe Rinaldi provided accompaniment with occasional help from parent Mark Pierce (parent of HOWL member Brittanie '10) on the base drum from the depths of the audience. Ba doom boom!

The audience was seated in front of a beautiful New York City nighttime skyline carved by Charlie Edson, parent of HOWL member Caitlyn '08 and Megan '09. Guests were treated to such New York delicacies as baked pretzels, Reubens, New York steak tips, and, of course, New York style cheesecake among other delicious fare.

A New York trivia contest had tables competing against each other for prizes. Students Hannah Pope '11, Christine Merry '08, and Caroline Wadman '10 and Phil and Cilla Stiles, parents of HOWL member Tim '10 were the trivia know-it-alls. Not even sure if there was a New Yorker among them. The prize -- a basket of Symphony chocolate bars.

A second contest challenged one audience member from each table to say "unique New York" 10 times as quickly as possible. Parents, alumni, siblings, and faculty stepped into the spotlight for the challenge. After everything was said and most of the participants were sent back to the dark corners of New York (by judges Tony and NIcky), their tongues in a twist, Elizabeth Campbell, dorm parent and substitute teacher, made it sound so easy and was declared winner.

Many of the musical numbers were encore performances from Brewster’s recent production of West Side Story. Soloists Grace Apfeld '10 performed  "Think of Me" from Phantom of the Opera and Ryan Cooper '09 performed "Manhattan" from The Garrick Gaieties. The full HOWL chorus closed the evening with "What a Wonderful World," popularized by Louis Armstrong.

On Monday, April 7 HOWL joined several other high schools and colleges on the main stage of Carnegie Hall to perform Haydn’s “Lord Nelson” Mass under the baton of the renowned conductor and composer, John Rutter. This concert was the culmination of an invitational five-day residency for the choral groups in New York City. To work at this high level of musicianship and to perform at Carnegie Hall, one of the world’s greatest musical treasures, are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for aspiring musicians.

West Side Story

February 21, 2008 -- The theater department, under the direction of Phil Atkins, raised the curtain on the musical "West Side Story" tonight. "West Side Story" is the musical adaptation of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet." The story transplants young lovers to the violent streets of New York City where they are doomed by social conditions beyond thier control. The world that "West Side Story" plunged into in the 1950s is still with us today. It is the timeless tale of love destroyed by senseless hatred between opposing gangs, the American "Jets" and the Puerto Rican "Sharks." Cast List and Production Staff.

N.H Juried Scholastic High School Art Show and Friends of the Arts Exhibit

January 2008 -- Brewster students did exceptionally well in the New Hampshire Juried Scholastic High School Art Show. Four students received five Gold Key awards, three students received Silver Key awards, and six students received seven Honorable Mentions. The students study under Sharon Lee (ceramics), Valeria Khislavsky (visual arts and photography), and Lauren Hammond (visual arts). In all, 105 teachers from 48 schools submitted 1,214 pieces to the New Hampshire Art Show.

"Juried art shows like the Scholastic Art Awards offer art students a chance to see that their work has meaning outside the confines of each small school community," said Sharon Lee. "The largest school is small compared to the world at large and each piece of art is the voice of one person communicating non verbally with the whole of mankind. Each of our students sentiments are valuable and a record of our history as a people, the human race. We need to reinforce that understanding and art shows help us show our students why their work is significant."

Additionally, four Brewster students had work featured in the Friends of the Arts 2008 Annual Juried Art Exhibit and two of these works won awards. Jenny Yoon '11 received the Freshman Award for her "Self Portrait" in charcoal and Michael Vandenberg '10 received the Award for Excellence in Printmaking for his "Che Guevara" print. This work is on exhibit at the Silver Cultural Arts Center on the Plymouth State University campus in Plymouth, New Hampshire, from February 3 - 28.
