What is Recognition?
The Brewster Recognition System recognizes and rewards students for sustained effort and tangible growth toward the fulfillment of potential in the areas of respect, responsibility, and cooperation. The Recognition System is based on two levels of achievement with respect to academic, athletic, and community life areas. They are:

Level 1: Citizenship
Level 2: John Brewster Scholar

Each level is associated with a set of responsibilities and a level of recognition that is commensurate with an individual's achievement. The system is built on the concept of equal access to recognition and reward, meaning that the highest level of achievement can, with hard work and effort, be achieved by all students. Students are rewarded for significant effort and consequent growth. The system is not based on a curve or competition between students. If all students attain John Brewster Scholar status, all students are recognized. The criteria for progress are based on the Student Performance Surveys. The surveys are completed by teachers, coaches, and community life parents six times a year.

Each survey contains 10 items that are scored on a four-point scale. Each item is designed to measure attainable goals.

The academic survey includes items such as being punctual, on task, and prepared for class.
The athletic survey includes being a willing participant, responding positively to corrective feedback, and demonstrating good sportsmanship.
The dormitory survey includes being an effective participant at dorm meetings, having a clean room, and making effective use of study time.

Citizenship Status:

Any student who achieves a score of 30 or better on each survey, with no item scored below a 3

Privileges Earned by Citizenship Status:

No daytime study halls
Privilege to study in dorm at night
One night out of the dorm per week (with approval of the community life parent)
Privilege to stay in dorm after 8 a.m. on school days until first class
One night of quiet hours per week

John Brewster Scholar Status:

freshmen and sophomores who earn scores of 32 or better on each survey
juniors who earn scores of 34 or better on each survey
seniors and postgraduates who earn scores of 36 or better on each survey
no item can have a score below a 3

Privileges Earned by John Brewster Scholar Status:

No daytime study halls
Privilege to study in dorm at night
Use of Student Center from 8-10 p.m.
Permission to go downtown during the day (with approval of community life parent)
Selection of a library book in student's name
Exclusive use of the Kenison Library mezzanine
Unlimited nights out of the dorm (with community life parent approval)
Privilege to stay in dorm after 8 a.m. on school days until first class

Students also complete a self-evaluation using each of the surveys to establish a comparison with the instructor and continue dialog about self-awareness and progress.
