Capital Priorities

Tennis Courts

Thanks to the generosity of a few special donors, the new tennis courts have been completed for the upcoming 2008-09 academic year.  Donations received supported the $507,000 project and the outcome is a beautiful nine-court outdoor facility located on the former Lower Clark Field with an incredible view of the Lake Winnipesauke shoreline.  We are ready to watch our community take advantage of this wonderful addition to campus and look forward to the special “ball dropping” ceremony during Fall Family Weekend to celebrate this achievement.

The Arts

Brewster Academy is actively seeking support to build a new visual arts facility.  “The time has come to place a greater emphasis on Brewster’s Arts program, and the creation of a new facility is a top priority,” says Head of School Dr. Michael E. Cooper.  Work is underway, with the support of donations, to complete the design and planning stage for what this facility will look like to best support the needs of our evolving program offerings.

Anderson Hall has received some incredible enhancements through the generous support of The David and Lynn Kravis Family Foundation (Jay ’07).  These include the creation of a first-class proscenium with premiere acoustics and updated lighting and broadcast media capabilities. With these recent renovations, Anderson Hall has become one of the finest performance halls in the area.

Daniel Heifetz remarked at the closing concert of the 2008 Heifetz International Music Institute that "[Brewster] has created one of the most treasured small concert halls in New England."

Endowment for Scholarship
Brewster Academy is actively seeking support to grow the school’s endowment for student scholarships. Establishing a named fund requires a $25,000 commitment funded over a specified period of time.

A healthy endowment will make it possible for Brewster Academy to:
- Respond to advancements in technology
- Offer higher salaries for top teachers
- Continue to further educate our faculty
- Provide financial aid for students who might otherwise be unable to afford a private education

Below is a description of some of Brewster's student scholarships:

Anderson Scholarship – Established by Travis K. Anderson and Betsy Harvin
(Jared ‘06), this scholarship is awarded each year to a student who has demonstrated a strong work ethic and sense of citizenship that will truly enhance the entire Brewster community.

Ballard and Dalton Scholarship – Established by family and friends in 1989 in memory of Todd Ballard ‘88 and Chad Dalton ‘88, this scholarship is awarded to a deserving and capable postgraduate student every other year.

Smith Faculty and Staff Scholarship – Established by the Alumni and Development Office in 2003, this scholarship was created to celebrate David M. Smith and Sheila H. Smith and their time at Brewster, and to help offset the expenses for faculty children to attend Brewster. David was the headmaster from 1974 – 2002 (and a teacher, coach, and dorm parent from 1968 – 1974) and Sheila was the associate director of admission from 1985 – 2002. They are the parents of Tim ‘91, Dan ‘93, and James ‘95.

Sarah Lord Lamb Scholarship – Established in 1983 by the late Sarah Lord Lamb ‘27 and her late husband, former Trustee W. Herbert Lamb, this scholarship is awarded annually to a Brewster student from Tuftonboro or Wolfeboro. It was first initiated to make it possible for a deserving youngster to have the same opportunity that Sarah and her sisters had.

50th Year Scholarship – Initiated by the late Adelaide Robinson Hughes ‘26 and her class in 1976 in honor of their 50th Reunion, this scholarship goes to a Brewster student who is the child, grandchild, or great-grandchild of a Brewster alumna/us.

Frank Rowe Kenison Scholarship – Established in 1981 by friends and family of the late Frank Rowe Kenison ‘25 who served as chief justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court from 1952 – 1977. Frank Kenison was a Brewster trustee from 1945 – 1970 and was then an honorary trustee until his death in 1980. This scholarship has “helped several deserving and motivated students achieve their goals.”

John Naramore Scholarship Fund – John Naramore was an active member of the Wolfeboro community for 35 years. When John became a Brewster trustee in 2003, he was eager to share his passion for education and apply his wisdom from his many successful life experiences. Following John’s death in 2006, Barbara Naramore and friends established this scholarship to support the enrollment of students who exhibit the same passion for learning and life that John shared with others.

Thomas Anthony Palazzo Scholarship – Established in 2002, this scholarship was created by Robert D. Palazzo ‘74 and the Palazzo family in memory of Tommy Palazzo ‘75, who was killed in the World Trade Center attacks on 9/11. It will be given each year to that returning student who, like Tommy, exemplifies enthusiasm, determination, and dedication to keeping the human spirit alive in everyone he or she meets.

Forrest L. Marsh Memorial Scholarship - Established in 1994 by a bequest from the late Anna Katherine Marsh, in memory of her husband Forrest “Guppy” Marsh ‘26, this scholarship is given to a postgraduate in need of financial assistance.
